This page has been provided to help shed some light on the importance of each type of device that is commonly installed in or available for today's computers.
A wireless network allows computers to share printers, files or an Internet connection without any wires between them. Wireless networking hardware uses radio frequencies to transmit information between the individual computers; each computer requires a wireless network adapter. A wireless network hub or router is used to bridge the wireless network to traditional ethernet or home phoneline networks, or provide a shared Internet connection. The current popular standard for wireless networking is IEEE 802.11b which supports 11 megabits/second data rate. Typical range through open air for wireless network adapters is about 200-1000 meters. In confined spaces, the effective range may be much lower. Wireless devices outside of networking include keyboards, mice, game controllers, and other input hardware. Related: | |||||||
