This page has been provided to help shed some light on the importance of each type of device that is commonly installed in or available for today's computers.
The purpose of a modem (short for MOdulate/DEModulate for the action it performs) is to convert, transmit and recompile data over phone lines. Now, they are also connected to cable lines and special ADSL (Asynchronous Data Subscriber Lines) phone lines. Modems are used excessively for Internet communications and are able to perform at speeds ranging from 33.6 Kbps (Kbps refers to Kilobits per second transfer time - maximum transfer times are limited by FCC phone regulations) to 56Kbps for phone modems, and 1.15 to 150Mbps for cable and ADSL modems. | |||||||
