This page has been provided to help shed some light on the importance of each type of device that is commonly installed in or available for today's computers. Today, due to shear size, most programs are only offered on CD. CD-ROMs are almost exactly the same as their entertainment counterparts, except that their purpose is to transfer data from a disc to the computer. CD-ROMs (compact disc read-only memory) are the simplest of the three types of optical drives (see DVD) in that they can only read data from a CD. A CD-Rewriter, as the name suggests, can do more. It is able to write once or rewrite data to a specially formatted compact disc. This enables you to create your own music compilations or distributable programs. | |||||||
